CMGConnect will provide the date for the next update training and Selection.com will notify you that your background check is approaching the five year expiration date. (July 17, 2019)
“As many as 40% of children who are sexually abused are abused by older, or more powerful children.” (Crimes Against Children Research Center, 2012) When minors volunteer or act as leaders in activities that involve other minors, we have a perfect opportunity to remind them that they now have a share in the responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe environment for themselves and others.
The Diocese of Colorado Springs, in compliance with the U.S. Bishops’ “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People,” has established training programs for volunteers who work with young people in our parish. Safe Environment Training is required for all volunteers who interact with children in any capacity at St. Peter Church. We thank our entire parish community for sharing our commitment to exercise abundant caution in keeping each and every child safe.
Who needs to take the training?
All volunteers 18 and older who work with children or youth are required to take the training. Positions include Catechists, aides, youth leaders, Confirmation team leaders, school volunteers, ushers and greeters, mass coordinators, choir members/musicians, sacristans, Knights of Columbus, Boy Scout and Cub Scout volunteers, and Challenge volunteers.
Do I need to take the training annually?
Yes. There is an initial training session for first-time volunteers and update training for returning volunteers.
How long is training?
For those taking the training for the first time, the training will last about two hours. Update training will last about 30 minutes.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring some form of identification (ID card, driver's license, passport, etc.).
For more information, please contact Julie Dickinson.
Who needs Safe Environment Training?
Everyone (almost)! If you plan to volunteer in the church or school, it's safe to assume you need training. This includes all adult volunteers who have any contact with children or minors, pastors, priests, deacons, acolytes, principals, teachers, staff members, choir members, etc. If you have a question, contact Julie Dickinson.
Why do I need Safe Environment Training?
Training is essential to our commitment to keeping children safe at St. Peter Catholic Church and School, and it is required by the Diocese of Colorado Springs and the Bishop's Charter.
